Library Practitioner Certification Program - Update

In May 2006, Western Council approved the following requirements for the Library Practitioner Certification. Implementation of the certificate program will begin by January 2007. Notification of the program's start will be sent to all State libraries, national library media, and available on this website.

The certification requirements are:

• High School Diploma or GED
• 2000 hours of library work, unpaid or paid, within five years of application
• 242 CEUs in specific competencies
• Renewals are required every three years and require additional 45 CEUs

Courses taken five years prior to the date of application are eligible for certification purposes. In January 2012, all courses must be from approved providers.

Western Council also approved a process in which organizations and individuals that provide continuing education can receive Western Council approved provider status. The approved provider application forms and instructions will be available on this website. Providers must adhere to the following requirements:

• The content and instructional methods are appropriate for the intended learning outcomes
• Courses include a learner assessment
• Courses are evaluated by learners
